The Reality of the Thailand Local MES Implementation Project (Part 1)

What is MES System?

At our company, we understand the critical role that MES (Manufacturing Execution System) plays in optimizing manufacturing operations. As we continue to prioritize the efficiency and productivity of our manufacturing shop floor, we wanted to share some insights about MES. MES is an information system that enables the understanding, management, and support of manufacturing processes, as well as providing instructions to operators. In simple terms, it is a system that manages the information necessary for manufacturing operations to run smoothly.

The management layer of the manufacturing industry is divided into three levels: the planning layer, the execution layer, and the control layer.

The upper planning layer is responsible for core business functions such as sales management, procurement management, production planning (including long-term planning), and accounting processes. The representative system for this layer is ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning).

The lower control layer is responsible for directly operating and controlling manufacturing equipment and inspection devices. Representative systems for this layer include PLC (Program Logic Controller) and DCS (Distributed Control System). Positioned between these two layers, the execution layer is where MES (Manufacturing Execution System) plays its role, bridging the gap between the planning and control layers.

  1. Resource allocation and monitoring
  2. Work scheduling
  3. Dispatching and manufacturing instructions
  4. Specification and document management
  5. Data collection
  6. Operator management
  7. Product quality management
  8. Process management (process quality management)
  9. Equipment maintenance and management
  10. Product tracking and product genealogy management
  11. Performance analysis

By effectively utilizing these functions as needed, MES enables the management and improvement of quality, cost, and delivery in the manufacturing shop floor, leading to operational efficiency.

With the trend of globalizing production facilities and the current situation of COVID-19, it has become increasingly important to improve productivity in manufacturing sites with limited production resources. As a result, there is an increasing number of customers in Thailand considering the implementation of MES.

Stay tuned as we share more updates and insights on how MES is transforming and becoming important for manufacturing processes.
