Integrated Workspace Improvement through Paperless Technology: NSIDN’s Factory DX Mobile App Development Project

PT. Nikawa Textile Industry or also known as PT. Nikawatex is an Indonesian subsidiary company of Nisshinbo Textile, Inc., a Japanese company that specializes in the development, manufacture, processing (including processes such as weaving), sales and imports/exports of textile materials such as yarns, woven fabrics, and clothes. PT. Nikawa Textile Industry itself was established in 1993 (starting operation in 1995), specializing in manufacturing spinning yarns and weaving non-woven fabrics, currently with around 700 employees working under the company.
As of 2023, Nikawatex has been operating for 28 years in Indonesia. Its business operations back then were still driven by a paper-based system, which often resulted in an average of 150 reams of paper per month. The high volume of papers made it less efficient for Nikawatex to manage their archives, as employees needed to manually browse through the archive and accesses tend to be limited to certain departments only, making it difficult to properly circulate crucial information within the company. To keep up with the increasing demand and minimizing human errors, Nikawatex needed to transition from a manual paper-based report and archival system to a digitalized report and database system. To fulfill this business urgency, NSIDN proposed a solution by creating a mobile application that can be used to input data and generate reports, alongside an accessible integrated database.
The project formally kicked off in September 2023, where NSIDN team developed the mobile application based on Factory DX. Factory DX is a customized digital solution developed and designed from scratch by NSIDN, with its functionalities customized to fit with customer’s overall business environment and optimized in factory setting, utilizing features such as factory data extraction, process tracking, machine counter, among others.
The development process included the process to trace the workflow used by Nikawatex and using it as a base to create a digitalized framework. This digitalized framework encompassed the creation of UI and UX interface, applying logical structures, integrating the application system into a PostgreSQL-based database, and deciding the platform that will be used afterwards. The application development process of the Nikawatex Paperless App was finalized in December 2023 and was continued afterwards with the first testing phase.
The first phase included consultation and partial trials, as well as implementing machine counters and early production process tracking functions. During this phase, only a select sub-department in the production division were involved in participating within the trials. This phase lasted for around three months from September to December 2023 and was considered a success. Afterwards, the second phase started on September 2024, lasting for three months to December 2024, with complete end-to-end production process tracking functions. A department-wide trial for the refined mobile application was conducted for the period, which involved all sub-departments within the division including the utility and warehouse departments. The trials within the first and second testing focused mainly on the production and maintenance functions, and the results have proven to significantly improve the overall performance of the business process, reducing the amount of manual paperwork and increasing the effectiveness of intra-department communications with highly accessible integrated database environment.
After finishing the second phase of the trials, it is expected that NSIDN and Nikawatex are going to move forward to start with the third phase of this project, where mobile application trials for administration functions will also be conducted on back office-based departments to fully complete Nikawatex’s transition to paperless business operations. The project is expected to start by the final quarter of 2025.

NSIDN and Nikawatex first engaged during their initiation to implement BizBooster, to improve their purchasing functions. As cooperation had been established earlier due to the familiarity to fellow Japanese-operated companies in Indonesia, Nikawatex entrusted NSIDN to execute the implementation of Factory DX paperless project.
Mr. Arlando Putra, Nikawatex's project manager, is responsible for leading and supervising this project as its appointed leader. As the supervisor and direct user of the product, Mr. Aldo observed that the operations were made smoother with the implementation of Factory DX. Real-time factory data such as spinning machine, machine data counter, process weaving, beam sizing and utility can easily be accessed in seconds through mobile devices or computer browsers, enabling a faster decision-making and administration process. "With paperless technology provided by Factory DX, Nikawatex's paper usage in operations was reduced by 40% per month, now down 70-80 reams of paper. In the future, we aim to further minimize paper usage to only 20%, when combined with NSIDN's BizBooster solution," said Mr. Aldo.
As Factory DX continues to evolve to accommodate Nikawatex’s business needs, additional implementation projects are expected in the future. Upcoming plans include the additions of change request and factory machine data extraction functions for further improving operational efficiency.
